Jonathan and Natalie discuss the practical setup of EMDR intensives, possible benefits and the importance of preparation.
They also explore creative bilateral stimulation and adapting EMDR for neurodivergent clients, traumatic brain injury and complex neuropsychological needs.
An EMDR intensive changes the usual session structure, so preparation is central rather than an optional extra. Dr Jonathan Hutchins and Natalie discuss how intensive work may be organised, what possible benefits it can offer and what needs to be considered before beginning.
Longer or differently structured sessions do not remove the need for careful formulation and pacing. The format has to fit the client, the purpose of the work and their readiness for what the session may involve.
The conversation explores creative forms of bilateral stimulation and adaptations for neurodivergent clients, traumatic brain injury and complex neuropsychological needs. These examples show why “standard delivery” may not be the most accessible or clinically useful option for every person.
Adaptation still needs a clear rationale. The therapist has to consider the client's presentation, communication and processing needs alongside their own training, rather than introducing a creative variation simply because it is available.
