ABOUT THE EPISODE

What we cover

Australian psychologist and AI consultant David Lopis explores how therapists are using AI, from scribes and prompts to reflective practice.

What can therapists use AI for beyond writing notes?

AI scribes may be the most obvious use, but the conversation explores several ways therapists might use AI around their work rather than as a therapist in its own right.

These include:

  • Writing clearer prompts by giving the tool a specific task, relevant context and useful constraints
  • Generating questions or alternative perspectives to take into reflective practice
  • Organising your own thinking before discussing the work in qualified supervision
  • Considering whether a chatbot has any limited role between sessions, with clear boundaries and appropriate risk planning

These uses are not interchangeable. A low-risk writing task is very different from recording a session, processing client information or introducing an AI tool into a client’s care.

AI may support reflection, but it cannot replace qualified supervision, clinical formulation, professional judgement or a therapist’s responsibility for safeguarding and risk.
