ABOUT THE EPISODE
We explore practical ways to use perspective taking, the therapeutic relationship and present-moment work without losing sight of the person in front of you.
Joe shares how skilled ACT therapists craft metaphors, notice when clients are stuck and help turn values into meaningful committed action.
Experienced ACT work is not simply a sequence of techniques. The episode explores perspective taking, present-moment awareness and the therapeutic relationship as ways of noticing what is happening with the client in real time.
It also looks at metaphor as something to craft around the individual rather than deliver as a standard script. The question is whether the intervention helps the client respond more flexibly, not whether the therapist has used the “right” ACT exercise.
Values work can remain abstract unless it connects with behaviour. Joe discusses workability, recognising when a client feels stuck and helping translate what matters into meaningful committed action.
That does not mean pushing immediately towards a large goal. A useful next step needs to fit the client’s context and be specific enough to try, while leaving room to notice what the experience teaches therapist and client.
